Buff tailed bumblebees

Today we had two buff tailed bumblebees feeding (probably female) on our croscuses. One stayed foraging in the croscus patch for quite a while covering herself in pollen as you can see from the photograph. The flowers themselves are past their best but this bee in particular didn’t seem to mind. She was sluggish in her movements so perhaps only very recently emerged from her winter sleep. Image.

About Murtagh's Meadow

As an ecologist I have always had an interest in nature. I love gardening and would spend all day outdoors if I could. I also enjoy taking photographs and writing. I live in the west of Ireland with my young family.
