Current Garden Butterflies – late May

The orange tips have been around for a month, and in good numbers, though the green-veined whites which appeared about a week later are beginning to take over now.

main orange-tip food plantThe orange-tip’s caterpillar food plant is the cuckoo-flower or lady’s smock, but they have been visiting other simple four-petalled flowers of the cruciferae family  – perennial honesty, perennial wallflower and ragged Jack kale, and even briefly trying out a cultivated double form of the lady’s smock.

Speckled wood butterflies have also shown up in the last fortnight, but only the odd one or two so far. Unlike the orange tips, they will be around all summer, so plenty of time left to observe.
