A rare butterfly sighting . . .

A couple of days ago a fine little metallic green hairstreak appeared resting on a large leaf near the greenhouse, wings characteristically closed. Gorse is one of the preferred food plants, so it had probably strayed up from the wild area.

I had never seen one here before. They are quite localised, but a look at the maps on

confirmed that they do frequent inland Mayo.

Sadly this one didn’t hang around for a photo call. But they should be about for another two or  three months, so worth looking out for them near gorse or brambles.
